According to calorie intake data released by The Food and Agriculture Organization, Americans eat an average of over 3,600 calories a day! How many of these calories are you drinking? I know when I wasn’t as cautious about what I was putting into my body I could easily drink 3 or 4 cups of coffee (with sugar and creamer) per day and 5 or 6 soft drinks. If I do the math that it comes out to approximately 1400-1700 calories! That is a massive amount of calories. It’s actually pretty close to the total calories that are recommended daily, but these are calories that have no nutritional value what so ever. Do the math for yourself and see just how many calories you consume from drinks each day. If you are consuming over 200-300 then you have a great opportunity to cut back drastically on your calories without even having to make significant changes to your calorie intake from food. WHAT PLAN SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
There are so many diet plans out there it might seem impossible to choose one for you. To make things worse, it seems like many experts and popular diets programs contradict each other. The truth is that most plans will probably help you loose weight, but that doesn’t necessarily mean its healthy for you. Dieting for wellness is about changing your bad eating habits for life. You don’t want to change one bad eating habit for another with some goofy diet plan that doesn’t give your body the nourishment it needs. Whether your goal is to lose weight or just to maintain a healthy body I believe the key to a good diet plan should start with good nutrition and daily activity. The rest will take care of itself. Eat more fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, chicken, fish, and even enjoy a steak on occasion rather then a hamburger. Avoid canned and processed foods, fried foods, and sugars as much as possible, and don’t drink your calories. These are simple common sense things that we all know, but we are looking for some kind of miracle diet. Most “miracle” diets don’t work because they are too expensive, too restrictive, or too complicated to maintain long term. Get yourself a few healthy cookbooks and go back to the basics.
